"Maid Cafes" have apparently started springing up in Akihabara in order to cater to the geek (otaku) crowd. Here customers can be served by girls in French maid outfits and live out a bit of fantasy inspired by PC games. Some have said that the geek crowd is disconnected from reality, and that it is a sign of the decline of Japanese society, but I tend to mostly dismiss such doomsaying, mainly because otaku culture is such a small subset of Japan, and Akihabara's "Electric Town" consists of only a few blocks of urban space. To put that much importance on such a small place seems a tad overzealous. This is not to say that Akiba (Akihabara culture/trend) is not an important part of Japan, but it's certainly not going to throw Japan into chaos anytime soon.

Hiyokoya is a "Maid Cafe" in Akihabara. These cafes mainly cator to the "otaku" crowd that has made the electronics mecca of Akihabara their home. Inside you would be greeted by a woman in a maid costume with, "'Welcome home, Master!''. The point is that it is basically a theme cafe, where anime geeks can indulge in a bit of fantasy. A recent article by James Brooke takes the position, and I would probably agree, that these places are more about the fantasy than any actual sexual intent, and all two of them that I have been to may have had some suggestive pictures on the walls, but there is no attempt to give the impression that one could "do" anything with the girls. There is no paying for "services" and most of the people inside were talking to friends rather than oggling the dressed-up waitresses.

We weren't allowed to take pictures inside, and the Japanese people there seemed a bit annoyed at the thought of a group of gaijin being there, so we decided to leave. It was busy anyhow, so we looked for another one we knew encouraged picture taking, but couldn't find it.

Our air conditioner remote is counter-intuitive from an American standpoint. The arrows themselves turn the temp up and down just like you'd expect, but the labels underneath are the opposite. Samui - cold, and Atsui = hot, so you would expect the "cold" label to be on the down arrow, and vice versa for the up arrow, but not so. Basically the logic is that if it is hot you would turn it down, so "hot" is on the down arrow, and if its cold you would turn it up, so "hot is on the down arrow. Just another one of those little quirks.

Koji Kobayashi, the producer for the serialized tv show that I was an extra in today called "Part-time Detective". The director was Sai Yoichi ("All Under The Moon," "Quill" etc.). It was quite hot out, and our costumes were very stuffy.

Grr! I'm a religious fanatic/rascist/cult member/terrorist! So apprently the premise of the show is that there is this kid whose dad is a detective, and so he decides to become a part time detective too. I think we kidnapped him or something, and he got away so we chased him all over the waterfront. It was really odd. Since we were there were only 3 actual Western extras they had us do voice recordings of us yelling stuff like "Goddamn Japs!, We're going to kill you in the name of Christ! You're going straight to Hell!" I hesitated a bit, because it just seemed a bit too much, but I rationalized it by telling myself the whole thing must just be a complete farce, so maybe it wasn't as bad as I was making it out to be. It was still weird, but also alot of fun.

This banner in the Jyugaoka train station for a pachinko parlor features cats which resemble the lucky idol maneki neko playing musical instruments. My first interpretation would be that they obviously chose to use the prototype of maneki neko to insinuate that if you go there you will have good luck and win. Plus they are typical cute mascots, which is mandatory (seemingly) here for anything.

More anime adverts. This one is for a pachinko parlor I believe. If you look in the background there is also a banner on the pachinko place that is sporting the cat with a drum from the train station. Anime characters seem to be the default visual advertising medium. It could be that they just love cute looking things with bright colors and "chibi" features, which is the explanation I've heard most often, and I dont doubt it one bit, but I suspect its also cheaper to pay someone to draw a banner than to pay a model and photographer.

This water runoff system works by using the tention of the water to make it run down the chain into a reservoir that is then kept for use in case of a fire. I have also seen ones which look like twisting slides.

The bamboo forest at a buddhist shrine in Kamakura. Bamboo is a very strong material, and so it is used even today in creating scaffolding for construction, as well as many other uses. Bamboo is considered as a typically "Eastern" symbol even in the West, and the Japanese seem to make use of it in every possible way they can, even when other more modern materials could be easily used as well.

A Jizo statue in Kamakura. The statues of Jizo are adorned with red bibs and caps to make him appear like the infants and children whom he protects. He is also regarded as a protector of travelers. Some have said that the bibs and caps are made and presented by mothers of aborted children, which I can't coroberate, but if this is true it brings the question of what spirit this is done in. Is it doen to satiate a restless or angry spirit? Is it done in memorial? How many times would a woman do this?

I have noticed many public lockers in the rail stations in Japan that have beautiful paintings on them. For such attention to be paid to something that usually gets beaten up and ignored in the U.S. is remarkable to me. This particular set has a painting of samurai and sohei (warrior monks) on horseback. I have also seen landscapes. The question is, what purpose does this serve besides pure aesthetics? It's certainly more pleasent to look at than a row of ugly lockers, but I suspect that it may actually keep people from abusing them too. If you are using something that obviously has alot of care and time put into it than you may be less inclined to abuse it.

The Daibutsu (literally "Big Buddha") in Kamakura. According to the signs this Buddha has survived numerous tsunami and earthquakes, and has been modified a couple of times to reinforce the neck and allow it to move on its base during an earthquake. Being that it has taken such a beating and survived it is no wonder that in emergencies people often go to the Buddha during natural disasters. Thus people do literally "take refuge" in this Buddha. But really, when you're a massive bronze statue it will take more than a little shaking and some water to put you down.

Plastic commercial tea drink bottles sit on this neighborhood shrine, which lies along a street in Kamakura. The question is, is this a normal practice to put tea on these shrines? Is commercial grade, mass produced tea widely acceptable as an offering? Was this done intentionally, or maybe as a sarcastic joke by some teenagers who didn't want to carry the empty bottles? Questions, questions. You can rarely take things at face value in Japan.

The stickers on this temple gate, I am told, are names of other temples, priests, travelers, etc. who have visited this shrine, which makes me think of the stereotypical cartoon luggage bag with stickers from various countries affixed to it. It would be interesting to inventory the stickers and see the range of geography covered throughout Japan.

John Gauntner gives a lecture on sake and the art of making and enjoying sake. John is one of the few foriegners involved in the world of sake in Japan, and has participated in sake judging, and has written several books on the subject. According to John the most important, and the only official, characteristic that separates the different qualities of sake are the amount of milling of the rice involved. Other characteristics of note are whether the final product has any distilled alcohol added (which most do have at least a little since it helps extract elements which create the final product), and wether it is pasturized and how many times. Sake is by all technical terms more akin to beer than liquer because of the brewing process. Sake can achieve a natural alcohol content of 20%, but is usually about 16% because this is the best state to enjoy the full flavor and aroma, without the alcohol overpowering everything.

These rickshaws were being pulled by some strong and highly tanned gentlemen. It's interesting that as an American I would feel maybe a bit odd indulging in this kind of activity, but these Japanese people thought it was great fun, even the guys pulling were having a fun time. The history of these things is what might be somewhat off-putting, as they were origionally used by aristocrats, and have that sense of making the poor and oppressed into "beasts of burden". These are not at all common in Japan from what I have seen, and are only at the places where tourists are likely to gather, so there may be a novelty to it that is purely for places like this to make some extra cash. The drivers didn't really take you anywhere, just around a predetermined path that lasted maybe 5 minutes.

This statue in the Buddhist shrine in Jyugaoka is one of its main features, though I am not sure who it is supposed to represent. Chances are it is a famous Buddhist founder of Japan, or perhaps this temple in particular.

This is another Buddhist shrine in Jyugaoka. The absense of the big tori at the entrance, as well as the statue of the monk give it away as being buddhist, even though many Buddhist statues will have Shinto shrines as well, and many Shrines can have Buddhist alters, with no feeling of contradiction. Indeed, the two religions mix quite often in Japan.

The monolithic bronze tori at the entrance to Yasukuni Shrine. Yasukuni Shrine has been a symbolic rally point for nationalist Japanese and those nations who are still concerned that Japan has not abandoned its WWII era militarism. This is due in large part to the fact that 7 class A war criminals are enshrined within, along with some foriegn soldiers. The controversy is compounded by the fact that the past ministers of Japan have paid regular visits to the shrine, which many in the wider Asian community see as legitimizing the atrocities of WWII by Japan. The shrine's purpose is to honor those who fought to create the modern state of Japan, and in a way they all classify under that category, even the nasty ones, for without their actions, be they good or bad, Japan would not be where it is today. But this philisophical point belies the fact that the enshrinement of some within has caused a big sore spot in many nations of Asia that suffered uner Japan's WWII aggression. One must also realize that visits by prime ministers are most likely done to appease the more radical right wing politicians, as the nature of the Japanese government necessitates coalitions by parties to achieve dominance. Thus, while the LDP may be the reigning party, and while it is itself right-leaning, it requires the cooperation of the extreme rightists, who are ravenously nationalistic, to actually secure its dominant position.

A statue of Vice Minister of War Omuro Masujiro, who's role during the Meiji Restoration earned him this statue. According to the statue's english inscription he studied western style military tactics, and designed the first western-style warship in Japan.

Just a few days before I visited the shrine a busload of Taiwanese protestors attempted to hold a rally outside the shrine, but were forcably turned away by police after members of the Japanese right wing surrounded the temple in defense. The police said they had to turn the protestors away because of fears that there would be a violent reaction, but their refusal to take action against the right-wingers casts doubt on the sincerity of that excuse.

A very peaceful koi pond resides to the rear of the main temple at Yasukuni. Some of the carp in this pool were monstrous. If you were to listen closely you could also hear shrine maidens practicing the shakuhachi flute. Sumo and other traditional Japanese arts such as Noh theatre are also performed on the grounds of Yasukuni, which gives the place a sense of being a stronghold for the preservation of traditional Japanese culture. However, one may be a little put off by the war museum, flanked on both sides by vintage canons, at the one side of the shrine.

Another entrance to the palace at Nijubashi Bridge. Some of the island that the palace is on is now a park, but most of it is still restricted. The monarchy formally denounced its divinity after WWII, and the emperor now acts largely as a national symbol. There are still elements in Japanese politics, however, that still revere the emperor, namely the extreme Japanese right wing, and to some extent the reigning LDP under Junichiro Koizumi. This does not, however, mean that they are the hardest working, as universities in Japan are seen as a respite from the intense examination system that one has to go through just to get into certain schools. These teen magazines are filled with images of tanned skin and teased and dyed hair. Looking at some of them you would get the impression that the old idea that fair white skin is becoming obsolete in favor of tanned skin, but then you go outside and realize how many people still use parasols to block the sun and keep that pale white look. Kyle Cleveland has said that this came from a fascination with American, California images, and has now attatched itself to the hip-hop trend in Japan.

A giant anime billboard for one of the pachinko companies in Ebisu. Animated sexual imagery is inescapable here. As is horrible spelling of English words. The billboard says "King of espace" at the bottom, but what "espace" is I havn't the foggiest. Sometimes its hard to tell what things are even in Japanese phonetical transliterations of English words. Example: Hamburger = Hanbaaga, pretty simple, but a part time job = Arubaito, which comes from a German word. So sometimes you can't tell if what you're reading something wrong, or if its some funky word that comes from another language.
